For anyone that may be waiting for the next installment of eSSe things have slowed a little as life events have taken over. Following Easter we hope to get things going again with eSSe and the next installment.

EssE Begins in dramatic style

It was a great beginning to eSSe on Saturday night. A handful gathered to begin the process of developing this event. Using mask’s, drama an atmosphere was created with two characters in masks entering the foyer. Some interaction with those present created a tone of reflection and the drama of being. As the masks were blank it could also have been a little scary. After some “play” with this people were led into the main space where there was some audio visuals projected onto a screen with blank masks hanging in front. Then Some words of reflection on the quote “who do you say that I am”?
The two characters in masks then did some more play leading into pasting pics and texts from Magazines onto the masks. They led others watching to do the same and giving them each masks to do so. It was an interesting moment of reality when all were sitting around in masks with all this “stuff” pasted onto them. Some more visuals raising the question of who are we really, and letting go. A youtube visual from Ikon (Peter Rollins) was used to highlight the sense that we are not these things. It draws on the text from Paul, neither Jew nor Greek, Male nor Female etc. The two characters then slowly even fearfully, began removing the magazine portions from each other. Obviously a difficult even painful exercise whilst delightful as the realization came that these things do not define us. Eventually the masks were empty and with those watching in their masks all the stuff was removed around the room. In the end was a sense of relief, peace and a sense of intimacy. See below some of the pics. We hope to continue developing this event with its strong use of theodrama, or what has been called transformance art ( an extension of “performance art). We are excited by it’s beggining. If you are interested in the next one perhaps even being involved in developing this event then let us know.

Yes, Esse… will be beginning on the 14th of March at the St Kilda Parish Mission. preferably we would like to meet in a local Pub but not yet finding one, we’ll begin in the church space. The idea with the pub would be to attract people in public space, that brings with it less assumptions about religion. Allowing those more suspicious of religion to attend and be involved. It will begin at 7:00pm and be focused on the theme of “being”. Again let us know if you would like to be involved.
